The Victorian pipe organ at Christ the Consoler

Organ Restoration Campaign

Help us restore the remarkable Victorian pipe organ of Christ the Consoler and bring its voice back to life.

The Friends of Christ the Consoler has launched an ambitious campaign to mark the 150th anniversary of the Church, called Project 150, which will raise £250,000 to restore the historic Grade I listed Thomas C Lewis pipe organ and recommission conservation heating to help manage humidity levels which do so much damage to both the organ and our stunning stained glass. This magnificent instrument is not simply an addition to the building — it is an integral part of the church's original design, heritage, and musical tradition.

Christ the Consoler was designed by the celebrated Victorian architect William Burges, whose vision combined architecture, art, and music into a unified experience of worship. Burges designed the church with exceptional acoustics, ensuring that music would resonate throughout the building with clarity and power. The organ loft and the instrument itself were an essential part of this vision, intended to fill the church with rich and inspiring sound during services and special occasions.

Over time, however, the organ has fallen into disrepair. Decades of use, age, and mechanical wear mean that the instrument can no longer perform as it once did. Specialist conservation work is now required to carefully restore the pipes, bellows, action, and internal mechanisms so that the organ can once again be played as originally intended.

A full restoration will not only revive the organ's musical voice but also help preserve a remarkable example of Victorian craftsmanship and engineering. Once restored, the organ will once again accompany services, weddings, and special celebrations, as well as enable concerts and cultural events that can be enjoyed by the wider community.

This project represents an important investment in the heritage, culture, and future life of Christ the Consoler. By restoring the organ, we ensure that future generations can experience the beauty of the building as it was meant to be heard.

Every donation, large or small, helps move us closer to our goal. Whether you make a single gift or choose to support the campaign over time, your generosity will help preserve this extraordinary instrument and restore music to the heart of Christ the Consoler.

Please consider supporting the campaign and helping us bring the organ back to life.
